Japanese Dolls

Welcome! This blog is mainly about traditional Japanese dolls, including kokeshi, kimekomi dolls, hakata dolls, and washi dolls, among others. I'll also post information about netsuke, various Japanese crafts, and vintage Japanese dolls from time to time. Additionally, I'm someone who's just interested in Japanese dolls as opposed to an expert, so please feel free to correct me if I get things wrong. Enjoy! :-D

New Year Ikebana

Despite the cold, the sunshine on January 1st filled our bedroom with a glorious light that made the new year flowers and my Watanabe Masao kokeshi glow.

Kuribayashi Issetsu Kokeshi

A recently acquired kokeshi couple from the artist Kuribayashi Issetsu (栗林一雪). He was active through the 1960s into the late 1990s, and these are part of his early style.

The woodworking is remarkable, and the fine details in his brush work is exquisite. The subtle carving and inlaid enamel painting for their kimono adds a level of detail, many times above the typical plain finished, more commercial kokeshi.

We’re very happy to have them in our small collection.

Bleeding dye technique is one of the techniques which my master Mr.Naruse had taught me.

The factory where I worked use so many kinds of dying technique,

but I loved to dye cats design by using this technique because of this fluffy taste.

Shortly soon, I want to dye many kinds of dogs design with this technique.

heaveninawildflower:

Netsuke (Japan, 1701-1900). Hare grinding with a mortar and pestle.

Probably refers to the ‘Hare in the Moon’, a messenger of the moon deity. The hare mixes the elixir of immortality with his mortar and pestle.
